A Silly Little Song

Penny
There's a song my mom taught me years ago. It was a silly little song, but I loved it and we'd often sing it during our Sunday School assembly time (with actions, of course). In fact, I've recently taught this song to my own daughter who is always begging to learn "a song she's never, ever sung before," when we do music time at home.

Maybe you'll recognize it. It goes like this...

Love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

It's just like a magic penny,
Hold it tight and you won't have any.
Lend it, spend it, and you'll have so many
They'll roll all over the floor.

For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

Money's dandy and we like to use it,
But love is better if you don't refuse it.
It's a treasure and you'll never lose it
Unless you lock up your door.

Is that familiar to you? Are you humming along now? Catchy, isn't it?

Quirky little thing, love is. But this song spells is out well, doesn't? Love is something when you give it away.

Maybe you don't find yourself holding tightly to "love", persay. But what in your life do you cling closely to that you do love? Your money? Your free-time? Your family? Do you ever freely give any of that away for the sake of sharing and showing love to someone else? Do you ever freely give simply to express your love of the Lord?

Jesus says, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40). My friends, if you withold your time from someone who is in need of it, you're witholding time from the Lord. If you refuse to give beyond the level of your comfort to someone in greater need, you're refusing to give to the Lord. Do you see what I am getting at? Love truly is something if you give it away.

On this day that over commercializes and tries to sell a cheap version of love to anyone and everyone that will buy it -- consider this: come back to the One who has given of his love for you so FREELY since the day you were born. He has no agenda -- he simply loves.

Our prayer is that the love of God increases in you until full and overflowing. Be sure to express your gratitude to your One True Love today as you rely on him to help you love others without reason or condition!

Beautifully written. Do you know Chris Rice song "What A Heart is Beating For" off of his cd of the same title? That poem could have been inspirational it seems. Love it. I have heard it before. Thank you for the article and reminder to love selflessly.
